Women \nhave performed better than men in entrance exams to a medical school in \nJapan since it dropped its policy of tampering with results to give men \nan advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Women applying to study medicine at Juntendo University, a private \nestablishment in Tokyo, reportedly obtained a higher pass rate than men \nfor the first time in seven years after it was revealed it tilted \nscoring in favour of men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since the policy was dropped, the pass rate for female applicants was\n 8.28 per cent of the women who applied, compared to 7.72 per cent of \nmales, according to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is a result of abolishing the unfair treatment of female \napplicants and repeat applicants,\u201d the university was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last year, Juntendo University was one of a string of medical schools\n in Japan that admitted to rigging entrance exam results to favour \nfirst-time male applicants over women and those who had previously \nfailed the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among them was Tokyo Medical School, which admitted it had rigged the exam results of women since 2011 in order to keep the number of female students low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The move reportedly came after the proportion of successful female applicants reached 38 per cent in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last \nDecember, Hiroyuki Daida, the dean of Juntendo University\u2019s medical \nschool sparked further controversy when he appeared to try to excuse the\n practice of rigging results last December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at a news conference, he said: \u201cWomen mature faster mentally\n than men, and their communication ability is also higher. In some ways,\n this was a measure to help male applicants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gender discrimination has long been issue in Japan and is \nparticularly rife in traditional professions such as medicine, with \nfemale doctors accounting for just 21 per cent of all doctors in Japan \nin 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The figure was the lowest among OECD member nations and showed Japan \nflagging far behind other industrialised nations including the UK, which\n had the highest proportion of female doctors at 47.2 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The challenges facing Japanese women in the professional world were \nhighlighted earlier this month when Takumi Nemoto, the health and labour\n minister, controversially declared that high heels were \u201cnecessary and \nappropriate\u201d in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His comments were in response to the growing popularity of a women\u2019s \nmovement protesting the tacit requirement that women have to wear high \nheels to work in Japan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
