The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the most challenging exams and cracking it isn’t easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the story of IAS officer Rajesh Patil, who cleared the coveted exam in 2005, is truly incredible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rajesh,\n who hailed from a poor family and once sold bread\/vegetables, battled \npoverty and beat all odds to become an IAS officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IAS dream: Rajesh hailed from extremely impoverished household; his parents were laborers <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hailing from an extremely impoverished household, achieving his IAS dream wasn’t a cakewalk for Rajesh. His parents toiled as manual laborers to barely support their family, according to TheBetterIndia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, Rajesh always wanted to become an IAS officer, even as a child used to call his mother “Collector’s mom”. In 2005, when the UPSC CSE results were declared, his mother was the happiest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Determination: To reduce parents’ burden, Rajesh sold bread, vegetables in childhood <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Rajesh hailed from a small village in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon where his parents had tiny agricultural land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His\n family struggled through crop failures, severe drought, and high debt. \nTo reduce his parents’ burden, Rajesh sold bread and vegetables as a \nchild and worked as an agricultural laborer until graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But, he was determined to do something to bring his people out of poverty and hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Studies: Rajesh could not afford to pursue engineering or medicine <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Rajesh’s\n parents were worried about his future as he wasn’t that great in \nstudies initially. However, he became interested in studies when some \nfriends and teachers helped him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He\n did well in Class-10 after which he excelled in Class-12 exams. Though \nhe could have easily gotten into the best engineering and medical \ncolleges, he couldn’t afford to pursue these courses due to financial \nconstraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Administrative services: Wanted to bring changes at the ground level: Rajesh <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Rajesh later joined the Indian Statistical Service, but his goal was to make it to the administrative services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I\n wanted to bring changes at the ground-level… I’d attribute the \nstruggles I’d been through…for instilling…that spirit of hardwork \nand persistence to never give up on my dreams. When I came to know that \nI’d made it to the IAS, I knew I’d arrived,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fact: IAS, an opportunity to be part of the transformation: Rajesh <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n “I\n personally saw it (IAS) as an opportunity to be a part of the very \ntransformation…I’d always wanted to partake in and that I would be \nable to connect to the people at the grassroots-level, inspire them, and\n be inspired in the process,” Rajesh said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Journey: Rajesh authored a book in 2018 to share his story <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n After training, Rajesh joined IAS under the Odisha Cadre.
